I’m very good on computers, although I also like to see other opinions.
I’m getting a laptop in the future, and I want to make sure I select the right one.
I will be using it for gaming such as Second Life, Battlefield 2142, and other shooter games. I am a college student, so I need capabilies with MS Word. I’m look at a 7200rpm HD, and about 2-3g of RAM.
Recommended brands? I’m looking at HP and Sony.

You’re getting the right idea on the specifications. Make sure if you choose intel core 2 processor that it is at least a 2.4ghz one
You should look at alienware and dell as well. They offer good computer there too.
I would recommend allienware because they have great gaming laptops and it makes anyone jealous if you possess one. All your college friends will be so jealous. Especially the ones that know about computers.
Second life doesn’t need a big graphic system, just a good internet connection.
Make sure you choose a laptop with a dedicated graphic card and not an integrated chip
